This collections includes miscellaneous programs, tickets, announcements and other ephemera related to musical organizations and events, as well as dances or balls and light entertainments. Some were collected by the Winchester Historical & Genealogical Society, some by the Winchester Historical Society, and some were donated to the Archival Center. An article by local historian Ellen Knight in American Music, Fall 1993, "Music in Winchester Massachusetts: A Community Portrait, 1830-1925"has been included to provide context for the musical activities within the town. |

Local residents are known to have had musical ensembles and activities during the era when the village of South Woburn developed (18302-1840s), through community bands and singing schools (to train church choirs). After Winchester was incorporated, townspeople were very active presenting concerts, plays, mixed entertainments featuring both local talent and guest artists. A partial list of musical groups includes: Brass band org. 1871, Choral Society org. 1929, The Clefs [1880s?], Friends of Music, Music Garden founded 1920, Mystic Glee Club 1940-1968, Winchester Choral Association or Society or Chorus Society active 1869 reorg in 1871, Winchester Choral Society org. 1930, Winchester Choristers, Winchester Community Music School begun 1981 as Winchester Music Program, Winchester Concert Series, Winchester Music Club [active 1980s], Winchester Music Society org. 1973, Winchester Orchestral Club, Winchester Orchestral Society, org. 1909, Young People's [or Winchester] Literary and Musical Association of Winchester, org. 1873. |
