This collection contains photographs from the water pollution survey of the Aberjona River, conducted by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Game. The original report apparently had 160 photographs, although two unnumbered photographs are also included with this collection. The Winchester collection includes 151 photographic prints, copied from the original 162 photographs. Photographs 1 to 81 include views along the Aberjona River in Woburn. Photographs 82 to 133 are views of the river in Winchester. Photographs 134 to 160 are of Russell Brook (a tributary of Horn Pond Brook) in Woburn and Winchester and of Horn Pond Brook (a tributary of the Aberjona River). The collection also includes 160 pages, one page to correspond with each photograph. Each page has a typed explanation of the picture, and most pages have a photocopy of the picture as well. |

In 1921, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Game (now Fisheries and Wildlife) began a water pollution survey of the Aberjona River. In its 1922 annual report, the division reported: "A survey of the Aberjona River in regard to the various sources of trade waste pollution was completed, in co-operation with the town of Winchester, as a result of which the town has formulated a program for the elimination of trade waste pollution in this river. Winchester is interested in its purification from the standpoint of the public health and recreation, and this Division in the relation of pollution to fish life." The photographs were taken between November 1921 and May 1922. Each photograph was given a caption. The result is a detailed photographic survey with annotations of pollution sources along the Aberjona River. Pictures include tanneries, piggeries, chemical manufacturers, dumps, and conditions of the riverbed and floodplain. |
