Admin/Biographical History |
The Winchester Smith College Club was organized in 1911 with a group of 17 charter members, including one member from the class of 1884 and eight from the 1890s plus later graduates. In its second year it became a branch of the Smith College Alumnae Association. In 1921, the club started its first Scholarship Fund for a local high school girl. The following year it began a Current Events Course which continued for 25 years. The Club engaged in support activities during both world wars. In 1947, the Club launched Community Concerts for seven years, followed by a Pops Concert, which was succeeded by candle sales to raise money for the scholarships. Later, film series were shown to raise funds. For many years, the Club contributed to a sister college, Ginling, in China and cooperated with other alumnae groups in town. In 1964 non-residents were invited to join. In the 1970s membership was dwindling, but the Club survived beyond Smith College's centennial. The histories in the collection end with 1975. |
