Admin/Biographical History |
The Middlesex Canal, which connected Boston with Lowell and ran through the center of Winchester opened in 1803 and operated for 40 years. The Boston and Lowell (later Boston and Maine) railroad was built in 1835 and continues to operate under the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. It runs through the center of Winchester. One of the longest running controversies in town centered on the downtown grade crossing, settled in the 1950s with the construction of the viaduct (or overpass). The first street cars (trolleys) were introduced in 1886 when the North Woburn Horse Railroad extended its tracks to Winchester. Electric cars were introduced in 1896. In the early twentieth century, trolley cars were abandoned in favor of motor buses. |
