This collection contains the records of the League of Women Voters, which is the successor of the Winchester Equal Suffrage League. The League of Women Voters records consist of newsletters (The Winchester Bulletin and The Winchester Voter), board meeting agendas and minutes, Inside Winchester pamphlets describing Winchester's town government, Know Your Town Government newsletters, correspondence, by-laws, budget and finance records, Fall Conference records, town charter discussion documents, Theatre Night information, and other documents discussing the political issues of the day. Items of note include signed letters from Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Leverett Saltonstall. |
Admin/Biographical History |
On June 2, 1920, after women had received the right to vote, the organization known as the Winchester Equal Suffrage League since 1888 formally became the League of Women Voters of Winchester. [See the Winchester Equal Suffrage League Collection.] The By-laws of the League state that the purpose of the organization shall be "to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government." The by-laws also state that the League "may take action… in conformity with the Principles of the League of Women Voters of the United States. It shall not support or oppose any political party or candidate." The League has periodically published an informational pamphlet called Inside Winchester, which states: "The League offers to the public information on voting procedures, on the functioning of government, and on legislative procedures. It gives facts about candidates for elective office. Membership is open to all women citizens of voting age who support the purposes and policies of the League." |
