Admin/Biographical History |
This collection includes materials from both pre- and post-incorporation eras. Prior to 1850, residents of the territory now included within Winchester's boundaries participated in military groups and activities. After incorporation, Winchester residents participated in the Civil War and subsequent conflicts. The first Roll of Honor, for World War I veterans, was erected on Nov. 10, 1918, to be ready for the Armistice Day celebration. The World War II Roll of Honor was dedicated in April 1943. Both world war honor rolls stood outside Town Hall for about two decades. They were replaced by a new monument, for veterans of both wars, at the corner of Mount Vernon and Washington streets. It was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1963. In 1978, wings for men and women in the service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars were added. Due to the deterioration of the rolls and lack of space for expansion, in 2006 Town Meeting voted an appropriation for the design of a new memorial. The Veterans Memorial of 2009 includes Rolls of Honor for the Civil War, Spanish-American War, as well as subsequent wars, and "current" veterans. The War Memorial, sculpted by Herbert Adams, was dedicated in 1926. Post No. 97 of the American Legion was formed on June 10, 1919 when a group of 150 service men effected a temporary organization and voted to apply to the state headquarters for a charter. In 1921 it was given the use of the Cutting House on Washington Street for its headquarters (demolished in 1969 after the Legion moved to Vine Street). The Legion Auxiliary (for women) was organized in 1923. The Legion has not met in Winchester since sometime after 1976. |
