Scope & Content |
This collection consists of four photograph albums which formerly belonged to the family of Fannie Ayer, Mrs. George A. Weld. Album I bears the name of Mrs. C. M. Ayer, Fannie's mother. Album II says, "From mother, Christmas 1879." Album III is inscribed "from George Christmas 1880." Album IV has no inscription. A great many portraits are unidentified. Others have been identified by (a) written names in an unidentified hand (or hands) on the album pages, (b) notes written on the back of some photos which provided clues to their identities, and (c) comparison to posted photographs at genealogy sites. Most of the identified photographs are portraits of members of the Ayer and collateral families. The only identified Weld portraits are those of George, his son, half-brother, and daughter-in-law's mother. The identified subjects include both Winchester and non-Winchester residents. Many photographs bear photographers' imprints from other areas of Massachusetts, plus Providence, Rhode Island, and a few more wide-flung cities. The photographs in Album 2 appear to be mostly young men and women of about the same age, possibly friends of Fannie and/or George. At least six of the women graduated from Winchester High School in the same class as Fannie (1875). Since documentation for the albums has not been located, it is unclear which family members owned them and conveyed them to the Archival Center. |
Admin/Biographical History |
Fannie Ayer Weld's grandfather Nathaniel, a carpenter, was born in Haverhill and married Elizabeth Fosdick in Charlestown where she and her father were born. Their son Albert Ayer married Caroline Stiles of Malden, and moved to Winchester by the time of Fannie's birth in 1857, living on Sanborn Street at Symmes Corner. Albert was for many years Winchester's Town Clerk and Assessor. Fannie Ayer (1857-1929) was a life-long resident of Winchester, a graduate of Winchester High School class of 1875. In 1878, Fannie married George A. Weld (1857-1918), a native of Winchester, son of Aaron D. Weld for whom the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic was named. For 20 years George was connected with a large company of shoe manufacturers in Boston, following which he founded and served as treasurer of the firm of George A. Weld & Co., manufacturers and sales engineers dealing in hot water specialties. |
