Admin/Biographical History |
The first issue of The Winchester Star was printed in June 1881. The newspaper was founded by F. I. and W. E. Whittier in Stoneham. In 1880, Theodore P. Wilson (1851-1919) came to the Star as its first reporter and in 1888 became the editor. A year later he bought the paper from the Whittier brothers. His wife, Ella Katherine (Tupper) Wilson, made regular contributions. After an apprenticeship which began in 1898, son T. Price Wilson (1879-1954) succeeded his father as editor. The office was originally in the Lyceum Building, moved to the Miller Block on Mt. Vernon St., and finally moved to its own building constructed on Church Street in 1915. After T. Price Wilson's death, his son-in-law Richard A. Hakanson (1920-1972) became the publisher while James H. Penaligan (1895-1978) became editor. In 1969, due to Hakanson's ill health and retirement, Ernest and Jason Dade purchased the paper. A change to phototypesetting and offset printing being needed, the Dades sold, in 1971, to Kay and Peter Jorgensen, and the Star became part of the firm Century Publications, Inc., which owned it when the Centennial Edition was published. |
