The collection consists of eleven cartes-de-visite and one tintype inserted into 6 cardboard mounts that were part of a larger album. The photographs contain images of Brackett family members, includes Edward and Amanda Brackett. The six mounted pages were purchased on eBay and have no provenance other than inscriptions on the mounts and on the verso of the photographs, which identify the subjects as members of the family of E. A. Brackett. |
Admin/Biographical History |
Edward Augustus Brackett was a leading citizen of nineteenth-century Winchester, known as a sculptor and naturalist. Born on October 1, 1818 in Vassalboro, Maine, he was educated there and at the Friends' school in Providence, R.I. In 1837, his family moved to Cincinnati where he began working as a sculptor. In 1841, he moved to Boston. The proceeds from his art were never sufficient to meet his needs. He purchased land in Winchester where he built an octagon house and started a nursery, growing strawberries and grapes. He experimented with hatching trout and designed and patented a fish hatching apparatus and fish ladder. Brackett served on Winchester's Committee for the Preservation of Fish before being appointed to the state Commission on Inland Fisheries (later the Massachusetts Fish and Game Commission) in 1871. He married Amanda Folger in 1842. After her death, in 1872 he married Elizabeth Bellville, a daughter of his first wife's sister Harriet Folger Bellville. Edward's children were: Frank b. 1846, Walter b. 1850, Lena Rose b. 1860, Bessie b. 1862, Bertha b. 1875. E. A. Brackett died March 1908. A four-generation genealogy sheet is appended to this finding aid. |
