The collection consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, and other records of the Winchester Mothers' Association, renamed in 1957 as the Community School Association. For the Mothers' Association, it includes two volumes of Association minutes, one volume from the Wyman chapter, and one volume devoted to the teachers and tuitions collected for the Americanization classes held 1926-1928, plus one folder of typed minutes 1950-1957. Several newspaper clippings and a few brochures are preserved with the minutes. CSA records date from 1957 to 1982. The CSA records include minutes, annual reports, committee reports, publicity, and other items. The materials highlight the issues and special programs in the district within each year. |

The Winchester Mothers' Association began in July 1887 as the Mother's Meeting of the First Congregational Church. The original intent of its monthly meetings was mutual help in the problems of the home and the schools. Officers were not elected until after 1892. In 1907, the group opened its meetings to all mothers and teachers of the town. By 1914, membership totaled 320. As of 1924, the group had officers, a board of management consisting of two members from each church and two teachers from the Teachers' Club. The Association had chapters in individual schools. Even after the formation of a Parent-Teacher Association in 1921, the group flourished, though it did concentrate on the grade schools while the newer group performed similar services for the junior and high schools. Prior to 1945, when the Winchester Scholarship Foundation was formed, the Association gave out scholarships for a number of years. In 1957, it changed its name to the Community School Association. It was still active in the 1990s. |
