Admin/Biographical History |
George Edward Smith (1840-1917) was a real estate developer who resided in Brookline during his professional lifetime, following his start in business in Worcester. As witnessed by the deeds in this collection and by newspaper notices, he engaged in real estate transactions in Winchester, at least from the 1880s through 1916. The deeds were donated to the Winchester Historical Society by his granddaughter Ann Hobbs Harwood. Winchester Park was a residential subdivision planned in the 1880s. Formerly agricultural, the land was owned by farmer Joseph Stone prior to 1849 when Frederick O. Prince (1818-1899) purchased it on speculation. It was acquired a year later by local merchant and real estate developer Jerome B. Judkins (c. 1822-1896). After Judkins defaulted on mortgages and filed for bankruptcy in 1876, Smith acquired the land. A flyer advertising lots for sale in Winchester Park through G. Marlon Keene of Boston appeared about 1891-92. |
