Photograph Collection |
Object Name |
Print, Photographic |
Scope & Content |
The collection consists seven glass negatives taken by William Belcher and formerly owned by the Winchester Historical Society, with which three additional, misc. glass negatives are also being stored. The Belcher set includes views of Town Hall, the Black Horse Tavern, 17 Chestnut Street, Bacon Mill, Mystic Avenue footbridge, and a second footbridge over the Aberjona River. Based on the construction date of Town Hall (1888) and the demolition date of the Tavern (1892), the Belcher photographs have been dated at c. 1890. Another noteworthy item is the wet colloidian plate of the Sherburne Tilton Sanborn House on Church Street, which burned in the 1860s. |
Admin/Biographical History |
Sever of these glass plates were made by William M. Belcher (1855 VT - 1933 Winchester) and donated by his daughter Elise Belcher to the Winchester Historical Society in July 1934. Print photographs for the Belcher plates were either made or donated, then filed by subject in the photograph collection. Belcher resided in Winchester (on Prospect Street) from the time of his marriage to Sarah Louise Claussen in 1880 through his death. He was engaged in business in Boston, becoming a vice-president of the Quincy Mining Company. He was a member of the Board of Selectmen (1908-1913) and of the standing committee of the First Congregational Church in 1904. He belonged to the Calumet Club and was active with the masons. |
