Admin/Biographical History |
Joel Whitney (1807-1893) was the patriarch of the Whitney family and founder of the Whitney Machine Company. He was born in Townsend, Massachusetts, but moved in 1844 to Winchester, where he founded his machine company and married Esther Maria Treadwell. He perfected processes for making various machines and was also involved in the rubber business. Joel and Esther Whitney had seven children, five of whom survived infancy. The eldest son, Arthur Eastman Whitney (1847-1880) followed his father into the family business and was also an inventor; most of his machines involved leather making. He married Alice Fletcher (b. 1853) in 1878 and had two sons. Both Joel and Arthur Whitney were heavily involved in Winchester town affairs, particularly Arthur, who was vice-president of the Winchester Historical Society. |
