Scope & Content |
This collection consists of over 2,000 cards kept to record information about Winchester residents who served during World War II. The cards were printed with spaces for more information than was gathered and it contains errors; however, it remains a valuable record of WWII veterans. |
Admin/Biographical History |
The 1942 Town Meeting created a Committee on War Records, whose members were appointed by the Moderator. The purpose was to collect data on Winchester residents already in the armed forces, then about 800, and on additions to the list for the duration of the war. The intent was, once the war ended, to publish the list in book form, similar to the book Winchester War Records published after WWI. By the end of 1945 there were about 2,200 cards. Due to the estimated cost, the book idea was abandoned. At its annual meeting in 1946, Town Meeting voted that the card index and files that the Committee had compiled be deposited in the Town Library. The card index was transferred to the Archival Center at an unknown time. |
