Scope & Content |
This collection consists of 18 ruled notebooks containing notes from primary and secondary sources on the subject of the early settlement of the land now part of Winchester. The notebooks include pencil transcriptions of deeds, plus notes on family genealogies and information from sources such as Samuel Sewell's The History of Woburn, Middlesex County, Mass., Richard Frothingham's The History of Charlestown, Massachusetts, and The Winchester Record. The research focused primarily on the southwest territory around lower Cambridge Street. The earliest document noted is the Book of Possession of 1638, wherein the land now in Winchester was originally divided among Charlestown colonists. Since the last notebook is numbered #19, it may be assumed this is an incomplete set. |
Admin/Biographical History |
References to a newspaper series on "Woburn 100 Years Ago" (1932) dates these notes to that year or later. The date and contents suggest they may contain notes for the History of Winchester by Henry Chapman. Since Chapman credited librarian Cora A. Quimby for "her careful work in tracing the history of the Squaw Sachem and of the early families who dwelt on the West Side and the Andrews Hill region," which are the principal subjects of these notebooks, these may be her notes. Quimby was also custodian for the historical collections between the years of the Historical & Genealogical Society and the new Winchester Historical Society, which may explain their preservation among the WHS collections. . |
